Fulton Emergency Services in Jeopardy

Police And Firemen Leaving South Fulton In Record Numbers

One of the consequences of the incorporations of new cities is police and firemen are leaving the county due to uncertainty. This does not bode well for us in the last unincorporated area of the county.  These same officers are also necessary to provide essential emergency services to all of the new cities including the proposed City of South Fulton, GA during the transition periods for the next several years as each strives to build their own police and fire department.

Here is a link to the Fulton County Manager’s Proposal to provide additional incentive pay to public safety officers to try to reduce the resignations. The report will be reviewed at the Wednesday September 7 Board of Commissioner’s meeting.

Items of note are:

  • The Fulton County Manager reports there are currently 60 sworn police officers serving all of South Fulton.
  • Police leadership and the County Manager currently anticipates over half of these 60 police officers serving South Fulton County (30-40) will leave the force by the end of this year!!
  • The county’s goal is to maintain a ratio of two officers per thousand residents.
  • Currently in South Fulton this report states there is only one officer per thousand.
  • By comparison the City of Atlanta has a ratio of 3.8 officers per thousand - nearly four times as many officers as South Fulton has now and nearly twice the number the County would have in ideal situations.
  • Whether you choose a new city or to be unincorporated, Fulton County will provide your emergency services until October 31, 2008

Take the time to read this official report provided for the Fulton Board of Commissioners!
